I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m a pretty big fan of anime. I know, I know, I’m an incredibly far-gone loser for admitting that, but hey, I find them entertaining. I mean, I do have a superhero tattoo, so I figure I can’t really get that much nerdier, right?
Well, I’ve watched several series all the way through, and I’ve found several that I really like. Probably the best of them all has been Fullmetal Alchemist, but I’ve been watching through Deathnote recently, and I’ve got to say, It’s giving Fullmetal a run for its money.
I’ve watched all sorts of series, and something that I like about anime (and cartoons in general) is that the protagonists are typically young adults. They’re usually extremely smart (when you watch anything other than Dragon Ball or the like), talented, and respected. That last bit is what I like the most; the young adults are respected. Here in the states, most shows targeted at the 20-something’s crowd focus on the constant generational battles waged between the younger people and the older ones. In anime (the ones I’m fond of, anyways) aren’t focused on the difficulties, rather the things that each side can learn from the other. I think the latter is a far more useful point of view.
How about you all? What sorts of entertainment do you like, and why?
Ah, entertainment. When we are not working we are entertaining ourselves. We even like to eat good food to entertain our bellies and even dream so we can entertain our minds while we sleep.
I have been enjoying a lot of American and British TV lately. I’ve watched Big Love, Black Books, Dexter, House, Breaking Bad, and am currently in the middle of The Drew Carey Show. It seems I’ve found a new love for things other than anime. I used to only watch that and movies.
I have seen some anime in the past few months though. I watched Speed Grapher. That was a crazy series. But a ton of fun to watch. I also watched GANTZ. That is one screwed up show. And violent. Wow. But equally entertaining to me.
I also got way into the Stars last season. I attended 5 games, one of them a playoff game. I’ve finally found a major sport that I can really get into.
Then there is the 4+ anime conventions each year. I’ve become really fond of the whole experience. I love the cool stuff in the Dealer’s Room and the fun panels that I go to. The people are generally great too. Just more of my type of people I guess.
And we can’t forget about my addiction to concerts. I love going to see the bands I like. I feel it’s not only the best way to support the band but it’s also a unique experience that only the attendees of that show can enjoy. For instance, I got my ticket signed by Billy Bob Thornton. I even shook his hand. An Academy Award winner. Face to face. How many people do you know that can say that? Everything from the CD release party of a local Dallas band with 250 people to the huge shows of big name acts at Nokia Live with 6,000, I love them all.
So much entertainment that I want to enjoy, yet so little time to do so. I have at least 100 books and manga that I’d like to read, just sitting on my shelf. I have countless gigabytes of audio and video to listen to and watch. I miss numerous concerts and other acts.
And I didn’t even mention my fascination with starting a game and never finishing it. I must love doing it because I think I can only name 5 or so games I’ve legitimately beaten.
PS Sorry that was so long.
jake: That’s a good point. We really do try to entertain ourselves all the time, don’t we? We are, each of us, entertainment junkies.
Blogging… even though I do it so rarely. It completes me, haha.
Other than that, I LOVE horrible, cheesey horror movies. Oh and Disney Channel movies. Plain and simple, I am a sucker for cheesey movies, they make me giggle.
Ren: If you’re into cheesey horror movies, you’ve definitely got to watch Dr. Giggles. You’ll laugh till red cornstarch comes out your nose.
BwaHA! Saw it, loved it. And yes, red corstarch DID come out my nose.
The only thing that would be cooler than throwing down with Deathnote and Full Metal Alchemist would be if you were impressed by my ownership of the box sets of Noir (and my ringtone of the watch) or my box set of Genchiken (or Gensiken…I can’t see the box from my computer)
I’m so glad you guest posted cause now I pwn you in my RSS reader.
Ren: Excellent.
jennydecki: Noir is an excellent series. And I am impressed with your boxed setness of it. Also, you’ve given me my next series to acquire and watch! Genshiken, here I come!
